Togolese striker Francis Kone has been honoured by Fifa for his life-saving actions in a Czech league match. He was given a Fair Play award at the Fifa "Best" ceremony in London on Monday night. Kone saved the life of goalkeeper Martin Berkovec back in February, after he nearly swallowed his tongue following a collision. Slovacko's Kone acted after Berkovec had clashed with his Bohemians 1905 team-mate Daniel Krch. He used his fingers to move Berkovec's tongue and stop him suffocating, after the player had been knocked out. Berkovec later wrote on Facebook: "I would like to thank Francis Kone for rescue and emergency… I'm glad for the relief and thanks again!!!" "I can't stand there, watching someone suffocate, without...

Nigerian football bosses have promised to conclude talks on World Cup win bonuses by the end of the year, to avoid a repeat of protests that have dogged the team in previous finals. The Super Eagles deliberately missed a training session in Brazil in 2014 in protest at the non-payment of a bonus for qualifying. Coach Gernot Rohr has said a similar situation would "be bad for our preparation", with the team already through to the tournament in Russia next year. Now, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said it would "ensure that negotiations with the players... are firmly concluded and agreement signed before the end of the year". That would help "stable preparations and credible participation at the World Cup...

Forward Eric Ayiah scored twice as Ghana crushed India 4-0 to knock the hosts out of the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in New Delhi on Thursday. Ayiah scored a goal in each half -- in the 43rd and 52nd minute -- to lead the two-time champions into the last-16 stage of the 24-nation event. After Aiyah's dominating show, strikers Richard Danso and Emmanuel Toku piled on the agony for the hosts with goals in the 86th and the 87th minute. Ghana enjoyed 60 percent posession in the game as inexperienced India, playing their first-ever FIFA World Cup in any division, could hardly breach their defence. It was India's third straight defeat in the first round. They lost to the United...

South Africa's new Global T20 league will go ahead, Cricket South Africa pledged on Friday, but it is expected to lose money for the first two seasons. No broadcast deal has yet been signed but CSA vice-president and acting chief executive Thabang Moroe said negotiations were well-advanced.

Sohag, EGYPT (Reuters) - Turn the clock back just over half a century and a contest between two men in the ancient Egyptian martial art of tahteeb could see the loser injured, or even killed. Today however, striking is no longer permitted in this form of stick-fighting, references to which were discovered written inside ancient Egyptian tombs. In the city of Sohag which lies on the banks of Nile in central Egypt, one martial arts school is working to keep the ancient sport alive. “Long ago, this game was violent, and about 60 or 70 years ago, it was similar to fighting games, because that was the era known as one of manhood,” said Sabry Mohamed, who founded the International...

Nigeria host Zambia in their penultimate 2018 World Cup qualifier on Saturday knowing that victory would secure a sixth finals appearance since first qualifying in 1994. The 2-1 win in the reverse fixture in Ndola 12 months ago helped get the country behind a team who had failed to feature at back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations. It set the tone for the Super Eagles' excellent campaign in a tough Group B, with Nigeria not dropping points until matchday four in Yaounde. The 1-1 draw in Cameroon, combined with Zambia winning in Algeria last month, have meant the Chipolopolo are now the only team between Nigeria and next year's tournament in Russia. Head coach Gernot Rohr will take much of the...

The FSF said FIFA had decided on the possible dates for the rearranged game, with the initial 2-1 South Africa victory on November 12, 2016 having been chalked off after the match was manipulated by referee Joseph Lamptey. The Ghanaian awarded South Africa a controversial penalty in the original Group D encounter. Lamptey has since been given a life ban by FIFA for match manipulation. Burkina Faso and Cape Verde both have six points after four matches in Group D, with Senegal on five and South Africa on one, but with this...
