500 athletes expected at 1st edition of Douala int’l marathon
The first edition of the International Marathon of Douala (MID) on 29 October, 2017 will feature more than 500 athletes, organizers announced Saturday under the supervision of the Cameroonian Federation of Athletics (FECATHLETISM).
Athletes coming from Cameroon, the rest of Africa and some European countries will cover the distance of 42.195 km in the streets of the five districts of Cameroon’s commercial capital.
Sponsored by legendary Cameroonian athlete Sarah Etongue, more than ten times champion of the Ascension of Mount Cameroon and renamed the “Race of Hope”, MID will be coupled with the Family Hike organized by Tara Sports & Events with the support of the Urban Community of Douala (CUD).
The Family Hike event, whose aim is to promote sporting values, will take place over a distance of 9 km.
According to organizing committee chair Eliane Nana, "MID's goal is not only to provide an opportunity for competitiveness for Cameroonian athletes, but also to make this marathon a reference event in Central and West Africa.”
