Nigeria were thwarted by the woodwork three times as they could only draw 0-0 with Rwanda on Monday in the opening 2018 African Nations Championship match for both teams. The Group C result in cold and windy northern Moroccan city Tangiers left the sides two points behind Libya, who outplayed Equatorial Guinea 3-0 in the first half of a double-header. This is the third time Nigeria are trying to win the two-yearly championship for home-based footballers with their best showing so far being third place in South Africa four years ago. Sunday Faleye, 37-year-old Rabiu Ali and Stephen Eze were foiled by the woodwork during a match which Nigeria dominated from start to finish. Rwanda...

Rwanda will be seeking to put their Cecafa Cup campaign back on track against Libya when the two teams meet on Thursday in a prelude to next year's CHAN finals in Morocco. Champions for the only time in 1999, Rwanda are at risk of bowing out of the tournament without a win after back-to-back defeats against Kenya and Zanzibar in Group A. German coach Antoine Hey has had the chance to study all 23 of his players after completely reshuffling the team that lost 2-0 to Kenya for Tuesday's 3-1 reverse against Zanzibar. "We don’t have any other chance to prepare for CHAN (African Nations Championship) and this is our chance to give every player a platform and for us...

Rwanda filled the final place at the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Sunday despite only drawing 0-0 in Kigali against Ethiopia in the second leg of a play-off. The Rwandans qualified 3-2 on aggregate having won the first leg by that score in Addis Ababa last weekend. Ethiopia and Rwanda will meet during November to fill the place at the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) vacated by Egypt, the organisers confirmed Monday. Egypt withdrew after clubs refused to release players as the tournament for home-based footballers is not staged during a FIFA international window. The Egyptians were eliminated in the qualifying competition by Morocco, who then replaced unready Kenya as hosts, creating a vacancy in the 16-team field. Egypt were reinstated only to pull out, leaving Ethiopia and Rwanda to play each other on November 5 and 12 for a finals place.

The US federal judge ruled that Gervais "Ken" Ngombwa, a Rwandan national, participated in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi that left over a million people dead. According to media reports, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Linda Reade on Wednesday ruled that Ngombwa, 56, was a leader of MDR-Power, an extremist political party that encouraged members to exterminate Tutsis in 1994. Ngombwa, who was already facing charges related to immigration fraud, faces more than 10 years based on evidence of genocide involvement, according to the Judge.
