Senegalese skipper and Liverpool midfielder, Sadio Mane, has been named in the Professional Footballers Association’s (PFA) Premier League (PL) Team of the Year. The 25-year-old was the only African player to make the list, the recognition also comes despite a premature end to his season. “Mane’s season was ended prematurely by a knee injury sustained during the 3-1 victory over Everton on April 1, but his impressive performances throughout the majority of 2016-17 have earned recognition from his peers,” his club’s website said. ... his impressive performances throughout the majority of 2016-17 have earned recognition from his peers. Before his injury, Mane had scored 13 goals and given five assists in 27 PL appearances during...

Leading scorer Sadio Mane's season could have run its course dealing a huge blow to Liverpool's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, manager Jurgen Klopp said on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Senegalese winger -- who has scored 13 goals this season and whose absence when on Africa Cup of Nations duty coincided with a slump in Liverpool's form -- is due to have his swollen knee examined further. Mane suffered the injury after scoring in Liverpool's 3-1 Merseyside Derby win over Everton on Saturday and had to come off. Liverpool have eight matches remaining in their Premier League campaign -- beginning with Wednesday's home game with Bournemouth. Presently they are third but only a point ahead of Manchester City, who...

FIFA said Tuesday it had launched an investigation into incidents which led to the abandonment of a friendly match between Ivory Coast and Senegal in Paris following a series of pitch invasions. The sides were level at 1-1 late Monday when French referee Tony Chapron called off the match in the 88th minute as fans from both sides flooded onto the pitch. Images showed rowdy supporters chasing across the pitch after climbing over fences while one fan was seen tackling...

Numerous pitch invasions forced Monday's friendly between Ivory Coast and Senegal in Paris to be abandoned before full-time. The sides were level at 1-1 when French referee Tony Chapron called off the match in the 88th minute as fans from both sides flooded onto the pitch. Liverpool forward Sadio Mane had given Senegal the lead on 67 minutes from the penalty spot but Fulham's Cyriac Gohi Bi equalised for the Ivorians just four minutes later. But after the latest in a number of pitch invasions, Chapron had had enough and the game was brought to a premature end.

Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho's penalty seven minutes from time secured a 1-1 draw with Senegal, preserving Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr's unbeaten record on Thursday. Veteran striker Moussa Sow had given the Senegalese -- ranked five places higher than the Nigerians in the African football rankings -- the lead early in the second-half. That goal looked like giving the Teranga Lions a first win in their last 14 meetings, dating back to 1977, in a match watched by just over...

Africa will host a Commonwealth Games one day despite the blow of Durban being stripped of hosting the 2022 edition, David Grevemberg, the chief executive of The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), told AFP. Durban lost the right to host the Games on Monday -- just 18 months after being awarded them -- when it failed to meet criteria laid down by the CGF, primarily over costs. "I wouldn't want to make a judgement call," Grevemberg told AFP on the sidelines...

Senegal star Sadio Mane demonstrated his value to Liverpool with a three-minute brace as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 in the English Premier League at the weekend. The Reds won just one of seven matches -- against fourth-tier Plymouth in the FA Cup -- while the 24-year-old was on Africa Cup of Nations duty in Gabon last month. Algerians had mixed fortunes with Sofiane Feghouli scoring for West Ham in a draw against West Bromwich Albion while Islam Slimani wasted several...

Up to 18 players at the just-completed Africa Cup of Nations could be involved in the new-look CAF Champions League when it kicks off this weekend. Among them is Georges Bokwe, one of two unused goalkeepers in the Cameroon squad that defeated Egypt in the final last Sunday in Gabon. Bokwe was kept out of the starting line-up by the consistent brilliance of Spain-based Fabrice Ondoa, who was included in the team of the tournament. But Bokwe is the first...

Senegal's ex-Newcastle and Chelsea striker Demba Ba on Tuesday rejoined his former Turkish club Besiktas until the end of the season from Shanghai Shenhua of China. Besiktas said in a statement that the deal agreed with the player and Chinese club was a "temporary transfer" and adding no payment was involved. "Welcome back Demba Ba!" the Istanbul club wrote on its Twitter account. His contract runs until May 31. Ba was a standout performer for Besiktas in the 2014/2015 season, and a favourite with the club's famously impassioned fans. He signed for Shanghai Shenhua in June 2015 to the disappointment of many Besiktas fans but was replaced by German international Mario Gomez

Sadio Mane's decisive penalty miss allowed Cameroon to knock fancied Senegal out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the quarter-finals on Saturday and join Burkina Faso in the last four. Cameroon beat Senegal 5-4 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Franceville, southern Gabon, in the day's second game following a 2-0 win for Burkina Faso against Tunisia in Libreville earlier. Liverpool star Mane was the only player to miss from the spot in the shoot-out in Franceville,...

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse insists Africa Cup of Nations opponents Cameroon are favourites to win the eagerly-awaited quarter-final in Franceville on Saturday. Pundits beg to differ, though, making the Senegalese Teranga Lions favourites not only to reach the semi-finals, but to go on and win the competition for the first time. Senegal impressed when winning Franceville-based Group B, defeating Tunisia and Zimbabwe by 2-0 scorelines before starting with 10 reserves in a 2-2 draw against Algeria. Cameroon came second in...

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse still looks back at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations with a sense of unfinished business, so Saturday's quarter-final against Cameroon offers a chance, partly, to settle an old score. The Lions of Teranga have never won the continental trophy, but they came mighty close 15 years ago in Mali when they reached the final for the first time. The other Lions, the Indomitable ones, stood in their way that day in Bamako and it was...

Islam Slimani scored twice but Algeria's Africa Cup of Nations hopes were ended after a 2-2 draw with Senegal in Franceville on Monday. The Leicester City striker put Algeria ahead on two occasions but each time Senegal equalised, first through Papa Diop and then courtesy of Moussa Sow as they finished Group B in first place with seven points. Like the Senegalese, Algeria were one of the pre-tournament favourites but they go out without winning a game, with Tunisia finishing...

Senegal sailed into the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe. Goals from Sadio Mané and Henri Saivet ensured the 2002 finalists progressed from Group B with their final match against Algeria to spare, but the margin of victory should have been much larger. “The goal today was to qualify, now it’s done,” said the head coach, Aliou Cissé, after early goals settled the game. “In the first game, even when we played...

Sadio Mane-inspired Senegal will become the first qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals if they defeat upstarts Zimbabwe in Franceville Thursday. Senegal enter the match with three points, Algeria and Zimbabwe have one each and Tunisia none. The northern African neighbours meet in the first match of a double-header in southeastern Gabon. Qualifying with a game to spare would make a welcome change for the Teranga Lions after two disastrous recent Cup of Nations campaigns. Ranked among...

Sadio Mane scored from the penalty spot to send Senegal on their way to a 2-0 victory over Tunisia in their first outing at the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. Mane netted from 12 yards with 10 minutes on the clock in Franceville and Kara Mbodj headed home on the half-hour mark as Senegal became the first team to win a game at this Cup of Nations after three previous matches ended in draws. One of the favourites to...

Gabon witnessed one of the most sensational finishes to an Africa Cup of Nations tournament when no-hopers Zambia stunned the Ivory Coast to win the 2012 final. Zambia failed to qualify this time, but the Ivorians will be among the favourites again when the competition returns to the central African state with the first fixtures scheduled for Saturday. AFP Sport rates the chances of the 16 challengers for the $4 million (3.8 million euros) first prize (last three competitive results...

Sadio Mane believes he is leaving Liverpool in good shape as he prepares to spearhead Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations challenge. The 24-year-old -- whose goal in the 2-2 draw with Sunderland on Monday was his ninth for Liverpool since his £34million ($41.7m, 40.1m euros) move from Southampton -- says the squad is strong enough to make up for him playing at African football's showpiece tournament in Gabon. Mane leaves Liverpool in second position in the table, five points adrift...

Senegal ended this year as the highest ranked African national team, edging Cup of Nations title-holders the Ivory Coast for top spot in the December listings released Thursday. Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Ghana and Morocco complete the top 10 compiled by world governing body FIFA. All the countries bar Nigeria will be among the 16 challengers for the Cup of Nations title when Gabon stages the 2017 tournament between January 14 and February 5. Another four qualified teams -- Mali, Cameroon, giantkillers Guinea-Bissau and Uganda
