English Premier League pair Diafra Sakho and Sadio Mane played key roles as Senegal defeated South Africa 2-0 in Polokwane Friday to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. West Ham striker Sakho opened the scoring off a pass from Liverpool attacker Mane and both were involved in the move that led to a Thamsanqa Mkhize own-goal before half-time. Victory gave Senegal an uncatchable five-point lead over Burkina Faso and Cape Verde in Group D with one round left. The only previous World Cup appearance by Senegal was in 2002 when current coach Aliou Cisse captained a team that reached the quarter-finals in South Korea and Japan. Bottom-of-the-table South Africa lie seven ponts behind Senegal ahead...

The 2018 World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal will be replayed on either November 8 or November 9, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) said on Friday. The FSF said FIFA had decided on the possible dates for the rearranged game, with the initial 2-1 South Africa victory on November 12, 2016 having been chalked off after the match was manipulated by referee Joseph Lamptey. The Ghanaian awarded South Africa a controversial penalty in the original Group D encounter. Lamptey has since been given a life ban by FIFA for match manipulation. Burkina Faso and Cape Verde both have six points after four matches in Group D, with Senegal on five and South Africa on one, but with this...

FIFA did not give further details but African soccer’s governing body (CAF) said at the time that Lamptey...

Numerous pitch invasions forced Monday's friendly between Ivory Coast and Senegal in Paris to be abandoned before full-time. The sides were level at 1-1 when French referee Tony Chapron called off the match in the 88th minute as fans from both sides flooded onto the pitch. Liverpool forward Sadio Mane had given Senegal the lead on 67 minutes from the penalty spot but Fulham's Cyriac Gohi Bi equalised for the Ivorians just four minutes later. But after the latest in a number of pitch invasions, Chapron had had enough and the game was brought to a premature end.

Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho's penalty seven minutes from time secured a 1-1 draw with Senegal, preserving Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr's unbeaten record on Thursday. Veteran striker Moussa Sow had given the Senegalese -- ranked five places higher than the Nigerians in the African football rankings -- the lead early in the second-half. That goal looked like giving the Teranga Lions a first win in their last 14 meetings, dating back to 1977, in a match watched by just over...

Senegal's ex-Newcastle and Chelsea striker Demba Ba on Tuesday rejoined his former Turkish club Besiktas until the end of the season from Shanghai Shenhua of China. Besiktas said in a statement that the deal agreed with the player and Chinese club was a "temporary transfer" and adding no payment was involved. "Welcome back Demba Ba!" the Istanbul club wrote on its Twitter account. His contract runs until May 31. Ba was a standout performer for Besiktas in the 2014/2015 season, and a favourite with the club's famously impassioned fans. He signed for Shanghai Shenhua in June 2015 to the disappointment of many Besiktas fans but was replaced by German international Mario Gomez
