Togolese striker Francis Kone has been honoured by Fifa for his life-saving actions in a Czech league match. He was given a Fair Play award at the Fifa "Best" ceremony in London on Monday night. Kone saved the life of goalkeeper Martin Berkovec back in February, after he nearly swallowed his tongue following a collision. Slovacko's Kone acted after Berkovec had clashed with his Bohemians 1905 team-mate Daniel Krch. He used his fingers to move Berkovec's tongue and stop him suffocating, after the player had been knocked out. Berkovec later wrote on Facebook: "I would like to thank Francis Kone for rescue and emergency… I'm glad for the relief and thanks again!!!" "I can't stand...

Olympic boxing’s governing body, AIBA, has banned African confederation head Kelani Bayor for three years for allegedly provoking the crowd at the continental championships in Brazzaville last June. Bayor is an AIBA vice-president and executive committee member as well as chairman of Togo’s national Olympic committee. “The Disciplinary Commission found that a hostile and threatening reaction to AIBA officials by spectators after the result of a bout on the last day of the competition was exacerbated by comments from Mr Bayor,” AIBA said in a statement on Monday. It found Bayor had “committed serious and unacceptable violations of the AIBA Disciplinary Code” at the tournament in Congo Republic. AIBA said the ban was from all boxing activities and responsibilities and...

The warm-ups featuring local-based players will be played in Rabat on August 31 and September 4. "Whereas AFCON 2019 qualifiers and the FIFA Rankings remain crucial for us going forward, CHAN 2018, which will be hosted in Kenya is equally important, and we are happy to have secured the two friendlies," Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chief executive officer Robert Githiomi said. Tuesday's action at the World Athletics Championships sees two of the most intriguing races of the program as South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk bids for the first half of his 400/200 meters double and Nigel Amos goes for gold in the men's 800m. World record holder and defending champion Van Niekerk should be unbeatable in the 400m but faces a stiff challenge, not least from Botswanan duo Isaac Makwala and Thebe Baboloki. Another Botswanan, Amos, will also have to be...

Africa will host a Commonwealth Games one day despite the blow of Durban being stripped of hosting the 2022 edition, David Grevemberg, the chief executive of The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), told AFP. Durban lost the right to host the Games on Monday -- just 18 months after being awarded them -- when it failed to meet criteria laid down by the CGF, primarily over costs. "I wouldn't want to make a judgement call," Grevemberg told AFP on the sidelines...

Bokwe was kept out of the starting line-up by the consistent brilliance of Spain-based Fabrice Ondoa, who was included in the team of the tournament. But Bokwe is the first...

Renard, a Cup of Nations winner with Zambia in 2012 and the Ivory Coast in 2015, was hired by Morocco last year and given a mandate to reach the semi-finals. Right now, a last-four place must seem a long way off for the blond, bronzed 48-year-old former Paris rubbish collector who always wears...

Ivory Coast made a disappointing start to their Africa Cup of Nations title defence Monday when held 0-0 by lowest Group C seeds Togo in Gabonese town Oyem. Paris Saint-Germain defender Serge Aurier came close to breaking the deadlock with two minutes remaining, heading a cross narrowly wide in a match that failed to sparkle. The result maintained a trend of stalemates in the 2017 tournament, which kicked off two days ago, with four of the first five matches failing...

The hosts entered the final aiming to win their first title and avenge two previous defeats by Nigeria. But a late goal by Oparanozie Desire dashed hopes and sent disappointment through the teeming...

Defending champions Ivory Coast believe outsiders Togo will pose an equally big threat as higher-ranked Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. "We must be wary of the Togolese," stressed coach Michel Dussuyer after the Wednesday draw for the January 14-February 5 African football showpiece in Gabon. "They have a lot of good individuals and finished the qualifying competition strongly. We have to focus on our first game." Ivory Coast and Togo meet on January 16 at Stade Oyem in the opening Group C match followed by DR Congo against Morocco in a double-header.

Togo's national football league is slowly resuming after a two-year FIFA-imposed suspension following chronic mismanagement. Internal wrangling at the Togo football federation (FTF) triggered top-flight football to be suspended in late 2014. FIFA gave Togo a red card, sacking embattled federation president Gabriel Ameyi and setting up a "normalisation committee" structure to manage daily affairs and organise new elections. A new president, Guy Kossi Akpovi, is now in charge with 14 clubs competing in this season's championship. Both fans and...
